The Words of Life
“The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. … No one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.”
John 6:63, 65
There is a fountain that has water flowing out of it, but we must come to Him and drink from Him to receive the living water. Likewise, all that the Lord has to say is for our spiritual well-being. His Spirit-filled words produce life. We are blessed when we open our ears and our hearts, when we listen and feed on all that He has to say to us. Think of Samuel in the Bible who displayed an open and pliable heart when He heard the Lord call to him. He was just a young boy when he said, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9).
The words which God speaks are for the feeding of our hearts. We do not necessarily need to read volumes of Scripture daily, but we do need to receive “the spirit and life” to nourish us. Remember that when God spoke all of creation into being, whatever needed life received life from Him. Through His Word, He is still breathing life and His Spirit into us each day.
The prophet Jeremiah said, “When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (15:16).
