Worthy of His Calling
“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:1-2
Understanding what it is to be “worthy” is a bit complicated. We know that we have tremendous worth and value because of God’s image in us. But we also know that we’re unworthy, lowly sinners, undeserving of salvation at all and desperately in need of God’s grace.
So how do we live a life worthy of our calling, as Paul urges here in his letter to the Ephesians (and again in other letters—Philippians 1:27, Colossians 1:10, 1 Thessalonians 2:12, 2 Thessalonians 1:11)? First, we see Christ and welcome Him as Lord of our lives. Then He, in us, becomes our way to walk worthy of Him. When we abide in Him, He lives for us and through us. He is our righteousness. We’re made worthy entirely because of Him.
But if we think only of our worthiness, we’ll boast about ourselves compared to others and forget the depth of our sinfulness. If we dwell only on our unworthiness, we’ll forget our value in God’s eyes and the beauty of His Spirit at work in us. Praise God, Christ intercedes for us and always lives in us, so we truly are worthy of His calling.
