Who Is Like Our God?
“‘I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.’ It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.” Romans 9:15-16
Who is like this God? The hardened heart struggles to understand that the Creator of the universe is full of mercy and grace. The unbeliever acknowledges no God at all or wonders why a God would allow so much evil in the world. He thinks trying to please and appease some unknown Being is a waste of time.
Without realizing it, I spent the first 18 years of my life trying to grasp who God is and expending a lot of effort trying to be accepted by Him. It was discouraging and defeating, like climbing uphill but never reaching the top. It wouldn’t change until I realized my relationship with the heavenly Father was dependent on His mercy, not on my works.
Our relationship with God has been made possible by His mercy. Even our coming to Him is brought about by Him drawing us to Himself. Simply, it is He who has called us, and it is up to us to respond by coming to Him. The Bible asks us to think of Jesus as our Shepherd, the One who leaves the rest of the flock so He can bring us home. What a wonderful image of God’s mercy and grace!
