Come to Me and Drink
“Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.’” John 7:37-38
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” You might as well say, “You can lead a person to Jesus, but you can’t make him believe.” That’s the Holy Spirit’s work. Just as physical water does us no good unless we drink it, so it is with the living water of the Spirit that is offered for all. Why then do so many miss Jesus’ invitation to come to Him and drink?
Perhaps what we’re missing is the “drink” part. We might have read about Jesus Christ or thought we understood what He taught. But did we drink in—truly partake of—His Spirit, this spiritual drink from which “streams of living water flow”? Knowing with our head is one thing; taking Jesus into our hearts is another.
Paul urges us to understand what the Lord’s will is and be filled with the Spirit (see Ephesians 5:17-18). When we desire to live the Christian life, we produce the fruit of the Spirit—things such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness. These reflect Jesus in us and show the world what happens when we come to Him.
