Coming to Our Senses
“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘… I will … go back to my father ….’ While he was still a long way off, his father saw him …; he ran to his son … and kissed him.” Luke 15:17-18, 20
“God allows us to become proficient in our failures so we will learn to be totally reliant on Christ.” When I read this statement, the story of the Prodigal Son came to mind. The younger brother who squandered everything strikes us as the worst. But the other brother was guilty of his own sin, too—sins that you and I might relate to. Both needed to come to their senses and repent.
God has one plan for every one of us: to believe in Him and come to Him through Jesus. Our heavenly Father knows that when we try to succeed in doing life on our own, we fail again and again. We may need to learn this repeatedly until we come to our senses and embrace the hard truth from 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
“Coming to our senses” is understanding there are eternal blessings for us when we humble ourselves, admit our need, and run to the Father. He is always eager to receive us. As in the Prodigal Son story, while we are still a long way off, the Father runs to meet us and embraces us.
