All We Need

“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness …. He has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.” 2 Peter 1:3-4

We have been given everything we need. Because of our sin, we are not entitled to anything. Yet God who is rich in mercy has accomplished all that He has desired for us through “His very great and precious promises.” We might think that these promises are for the future. However, these are great promises for today which have been fulfilled through Christ.

It is a wonderful day when we realize that we were created to be God’s children. When we are born from above and by His Spirit, we are now His offspring. Just as loving parents give what is needed to their child, so does God give to us even more than we could ever ask for or imagine.

The word “given” is important. Grace and mercy are that which are given. It seemed to me as I was growing up that I had to work toward being a good Christian boy. I was not told that what I had to do to please God had already been given to me and accomplished for me through Christ. His “precious promises” saved me and made it possible for me to “participate in the divine nature.” What more could I need?
