Diving into God’s Word
“Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Acts 17:11
I spent several summers on Catalina Island, California, as the nature specialist at a family camp. Daily the experience revealed the wonders of our Creator God. I saw countless glimpses of biblical principles evident in nature there, like this story about kelp.
Kelp is a giant marine forest-forming seaweed growing along ocean coastlines. Its tangled network of “roots” are a massive anchor for the 200-foot-long algae. When these wash up on the beach, they look like enormous heaps of spaghetti. Upon closer inspection, you may discover little gooseneck barnacles, limpets, and skeleton shrimp clinging at the surface. Dig deeper and you observe brittle stars, bat stars, hermit crabs, and baby sea urchins. Investigate yet further and you might find a small octopus, a shark egg, a decorator crab, or a mantis shrimp!
Diving into the Word of the Lord should be exciting like making discoveries in a holdfast of kelp. The first time you read a new passage, the Spirit may reveal one truth. But in broader context, you’ll see God’s story of redemption.
Mix up your Bible study routine. Study deep and wide, looking at large sections of Scripture and sometimes diving into rich passages even further.
