Part of God’s Family
“To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:12-13
I have been road biking for over 45 years and enjoy many aspects of the sport. On nearly every ride, there’s an unspoken camaraderie. Riders approach each other from opposite directions and give a friendly wave. When one rider passes another, they exchange pleasant hellos. If a rider is off to the roadside with a flat tire, other riders going by always offer to help. Though we’re complete strangers, we share a joy of cycling and see each other as friends, if not family.
Christians share a similar but more profound bond because we have become brothers and sisters in Christ. This family kinship is often visible to the world. During my seminary years, we and several other seminary students lived in an apartment complex where the manager was not a Christian. She loved renting to seminarians, however—they were quiet and always paid their rent on time! She also marveled that though we students had never met and had come from all over the world, we were like family. She could see how we cared for one another, and it left an impression on her.
The world looks closely at how Christians love one another. Are you loving the brothers and sisters in your life to the glory of God?
