Our Perfect Guide
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, … who for the joy set before him endured the cross, … and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2
Early in our marriage, Kathy and I spent a lot of time bike touring through the quiet countrysides of Wisconsin. We covered 800 miles on our first adventure but hardly knew what we were getting into as we pedaled off that first day. While we learned as we went along, we never could have done it without our map. Long before cell phones or GPS technology, the map showed us recommended bike routes, repair shops, grocery stores, campgrounds, etc. We depended on it.
In the Old Testament, the Ark of the Covenant was the GPS—the map, so to speak—for the Israelites. Just before they were to cross the Jordan to the Promised Land, the Lord sent the priests carrying the Ark ahead of everyone. It could be seen out front and would show them where to go, for they had “not passed this way before.”
In the same way, we look to Jesus as we follow the Lord. Each day is one we haven’t lived before. We need a map. We need an “Ark” out front leading us. The author of Hebrews invites us to look to Jesus, the One whom the Ark was pointing to all along.
As the Israelites surely entered the Promised Land, we too, as we look to Jesus, will one day be with Him in our heavenly home.
