Costly Love

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Part of my responsibility as camp naturalist was teaching young children about God’s beautiful creation and fascinating creatures. One of the most intriguing creatures I kept on display while I was “Nature Nate” was a moray eel.

To swallow food, these eels use dual sets of independently articulating jaws instead of a tongue. I carried the meter-long eel in a net to the jetty to release him. Unfortunately, he had tied himself in knots attempting to escape, tangling himself in the net. Once I cut him free, he whipped around and sank his teeth deep into my thumb. Of all the creatures that have snapped at me, this was by far the most painful bite I’ve ever sustained!

When we experience difficult circumstances, we find it easy to blame God. Like the eel stuck in the net and striking me, we can lash out at God when He is using the situation to better our faith and mature us as Christians. He is always at work for our good and His glory.

After a second bite, I shook my thumb free and let the eel slip into the water where he was happy to be back home.

Romans 5:12-21

When you want to lash out at God for His planned providence in your life, remember how Jesus took the blows for you at the cross to make you His own.
