Freedom Ride
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
Where do you feel free? At the ocean? In the mountains or desert? For me it’s anywhere I am while on the bike. I remember how that freedom first felt as a kid when I rode into town without needing my parents to drive me. I still enjoy it every time I ride. The wind at my back, the joy of flying down a hill, the chance to take in the scenery at a slower pace than in a car all heighten the sense of freedom.
Wherever you feel most free, it’s but a pointer to the true, absolute, imperishable freedom that Jesus offers us. In today’s reading, Paul tells us that Jesus came to do two things for us. First, He took the punishment our sin deserves, paying the full penalty by His death on the cross. At the same time, He credits to us His flawless obedience, so we can stand before our heavenly Father as His dearly loved, perfectly obedient children. We have eternal freedom from sin and death.
Next time you are in the place where you feel free, remind yourself of what Jesus has done for you and let your feeling of freedom find its foundation in Him.
“Mercy there was great, and grace was free,/Pardon there was multiplied to me./ Theremy burdened soul found liberty,/ At Calvary!” (William Newell, 1895)
