I Am with You
“Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20
There could hardly be more comforting words. No human being can give you such a promise. Jesus spoke these words after the resurrection and after He had revealed Himself to His disciples. Before His crucifixion, He prepared His disciples for His death and resurrection. But with these words, He was preparing them for what was to happen after His ascension into heaven.
I love the sound of the absolute assurance in the original Greek word order: “I with you am.” The Lord Jesus was not going to leave them, for He is the God who always exists, the great I Am, the “I Am who I Am” of Exodus 3:14. This Jesus, who is God, would continue to be with them to the very end of the age.
Shortly after Jesus had spoken these words, the Holy Spirit was poured out so all who believed in Him would receive Him spiritually. Jesus’ visible physical presence was replaced by His Spirit to live within all believers wherever they are. Teaching about the Spirit, Jesus said, “I will come to you. … On that day you will realize that … I am in you” (John 14:18, 20).
