Living in Christ
“If a man remains in me, and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
I remember a conversation I had with some friends back in college. Our talk went into the wee hours of the morning as we discussed what the will of God is and how can we know it. During that discussion, I thought about John 15 and the fact that without Jesus we can do nothing. Remaining in Him is necessary for knowing His will and for living, as essential as it is for a branch to be growing attached to a vine.
The word “remain” in this passage suggests to abide, to live, and to stay. What comfort and assurance those notions bring! When you have a place to live—a place where you abide and stay—you flourish and grow. In that nurturing place, you bear fruit. When you bear fruit, you are in God’s will.
Have you found your home in Jesus? It’s hard to live the Christian life on our own. But God never intended us to. When He gave us His Son, His Holy Spirit, and His Word, He provided the way for us to be connected to Him. We abide with Him through these and are in His will. We find we can do all things through Him because He strengthens us.
