Tending the Next Generation

“To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” 1 Timothy 1:2

Paul expresses his deep love for Timothy, the young pastor he is mentoring, calling him a “true child in the faith.” Paul’s gospel work was likely an integral part of Timothy’s conversion and call to ministry. We can tell he was committed to Timothy’s growth in grace.

As a dad and a pastor, I have the privilege of loving not only my own three kids, but also many other “spiritual children” in my life. The friends of my teenagers are in our house every week. It’s sweet to watch them all grow, enjoy each other, and learn to trust God. Like Paul desired for Timothy, we want our children to know “grace, mercy, and peace from God,” especially in a world of constant unrest, difficulty, and disappointment.

Who are the people in your life to whom you can show God’s grace, mercy, and peace? You may know someone who needs encouragement and an opportunity to see the Christian life lived out. Don’t worry if you feel inadequate. All that is needed is your consistent presence in their lives as you learn to live in community and show Jesus to the world.
