Acts of Compassion
“Deacons, likewise, must be dignified, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.” 1 Timothy 3:8-9
God is a God of mercy and kindness, and He has set out roles and offices in the church that reflect His character. The office of deacon is one of sympathy, service, and mercy. God gave such servants to His church to help meet material needs with acts of compassion (see Acts 6:1-7). Paul has instructed Timothy and us quite clearly concerning the character required of a deacon.
Deacons are to be worthy of respect, honorable in character and actions. They must be people who speak the truth of the gospel and whose sinful appetites are under control. They must not be tempted to seek dishonest financial gain. These qualifications are particularly important because deacons will be called upon to handle financial matters and deal at times with people struggling with these very issues. The deacon’s character is to reflect Jesus Christ who is full of compassion and was tempted in every way yet was without sin.
Praise God that our heavenly Father designed His church to do as He did when He would look on the crowds and have compassion on them.
