The Motivation We Need
“In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame.” 1 Timothy 6:13-14
What motivates you to obey the Lord? Is it duty? Or do you wish to avoid the earthly consequences of disobeying? Do you hate the guilty feelings associated with disobedience? Or perhaps you think God will love you more if you obey. Paul gives Timothy a high bar for obedience, but also very high motive for doing so.
According to Paul, our desire to obey ought to be wholehearted. David said in Psalm 119, “You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!” (vv. 4-5).
Remembering that we live always before the face of God ought to make us walk carefully and with a desire to please Him. Also, since God is the One who “gives life to everything,” He sustains His creation and supplies the power to live a godly life. And don’t forget how Jesus’ stunning obedience before Pontius Pilate motivates us. He made the “good confession,” not wavering from His road to the cross to save you and me.
One day Jesus will return, and our striving will be over as He takes us home and perfects us.
