Last Words for a Hard World
“God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light …. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 6:15–16
The word “doxology” means “word of glory” in Greek. Can you hear Paul’s joy in these words of glory as he describes his beloved Savior, the King of kings and Lord of lords? All kingship and power are His. No earthly, sinful eye can behold His holiness. He is worthy of our worship.
Now dwell on the four brief but crucial final words in Paul’s letter to Timothy. They make up a benediction that carries immense comfort for us: “Grace be with you” (v. 21). Grace is God’s unmerited favor, especially that which comes to us through salvation in Jesus. Friends, you have God’s unmerited favor! It comes to you in Jesus, and it lives in you by His Spirit.
No matter how well or how poorly you follow the instructions Paul gave Timothy and us in this letter—to obey the law, to avoid false teaching, to have modesty, to lead honorably in the church, to show compassion, to avoid lies, to not worship money, and so on—you face this world’s challenges with the grace the Lord Jesus grants you. When you fail, His perfect record covers over all your shortfalls.
