When Leaders Fail
“Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning.” 1 Timothy 5:19-20
A practical matter in the sometimes-messy process of Christian growth is how to handle the problems when a leader falls into sin. At the outset, we must be careful about making accusations. When someone wants to discredit a leader, a mere allegation can cast a shadow over their ministry. And that has lasting effects.
But when a leader persists in sin and refuses to repent, the circle for addressing it must widen. In Matthew 18 we read Jesus’ instructions to first go privately to the one who has sinned. If they refuse to listen, then try again, taking two or three people with you. If they still refuse, Jesus says, “tell it to the church” (v. 17). These are difficult steps to walk through. However, matters are made worse when fellow leaders try to cover up a leader’s failure or downplay the gravity of the sin. Have none of it; rather, “keep yourself pure”
(1 Timothy 5:22).
Living coram deo, in the presence of God, moves us to walk with care. We do not overlook sin. We lay it before the Lord, the only true and righteous leader of our souls.
