Two Basic Truths
“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.” 1 Timothy 1:15
God wants us to fully accept two basic truths: that we are helpless sinners, and that Jesus is the all-sufficient One to save us from our sins. To fully accept these is to understand ourselves and to begin to comprehend the matchless love of Jesus.
Paul described himself as the worst of sinners. He wasn’t comparing himself to the rest of the world, but rather was admitting the depths of his need before a holy God. We too must be willing to take such an honest look at ourselves and know it’s our sin that condemns us.
But those who seek such honesty before the Lord are not left in that lost condition, because “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” John Newton, the 18th century English pastor, slavery abolitionist, and author of the hymn “Amazing Grace,” said this at the end of his life: “Although my memory’s fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner, and Christ is a great Savior.” Indeed, our great Savior Jesus is able to save not just some, but all who come to Him in repentance and faith.
