Leading in Humility
“He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.” 1 Timothy 3:6
Leadership is risky because the temptation to grow prideful lurks when someone is called into a position of authority. As Paul continues to describe the picture of the godly man who would serve as an elder in the church, he urges leaders to avoid giving Satan a foothold.
The temptation to think too highly of ourselves is not new. Moses faced this while growing up in Pharaoh’s family. David may have dealt with this when he defeated Goliath. Young Joseph was perceived to have this problem when he described his dreams of ruling over his brothers (probably not a great idea to share such dreams with them!). Paul recognizes that time and maturity are important, so he exhorts the church to not place a young believer in a leadership position.
The longer we live in this broken world, the more we confront our own failures and weakness. You and I know this firsthand. As we see the humility of our Savior, we also grow in humility, though it may take time (Moses’ humbling in the wilderness took 40 years!). How desperately we need God’s grace.
