Being Peacemakers
“If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree with the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ …, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels.” 1 Timothy 6:3-4
I think most of us would say that we prefer to avoid controversy and conflict. Yet often we leap headlong into emotionally-charged discussions about what is happening in our world. We like to be “in the know” about the latest squabble in our relational circle as well as in wider venues.
But Paul’s warning comes to the person whose knowledge of God and of the Bible is unsound, and who craves arguments and quarrels in spiritual matters. Some controversies are inevitable, because we must protect the church and the sound doctrine God has given. But those who have an unhealthy craving for these quarrels grow proud and enjoy sowing the seeds of envy, slander, and dissension within the church. Their selfish motives convince them that “godliness is a means to financial gain” (v. 5).
Be on guard against those who would sow such division among you. Refuse to listen or take part in it. Also be on guard in your own heart against the temptation to stir up strife. Hold fast to sound biblical teaching and seek to be a peacemaker among God’s people.
