Spiritual Physical Fitness
“Have nothing to do with godless myths …; rather train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7-8
I wonder how many of us made fitness resolutions on January 1 that by now are faded memories. I know I did. Discipline is hard, isn’t it? But taking care of our bodies is important, especially as we grow older. Paul borrows the language of the gymnasium, recognizing that physical training has “some value,” to describe our need for spiritual discipline.
The training of elite athletes in the Greek games is a good metaphor for our pursuit of maturity in Christ. Paul tells us to train ourselves for godliness like an athlete would train for a race—being faithful to do the workout, to nourish ourselves wisely, to stay focused, etc. Being good stewards of our bodies is of great value. But the benefit of such discipline is limited to this life, while the pursuit of godliness is bound up with our eternal life.
As we draw near to God by His Word, with prayer, and through living out the gospel, we are gaining a double blessing … for this present life and also for our heavenly home. Pray that the Lord would help you stay disciplined for Him.
