Our King Eternal
“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:17
In 1867 Scottish pastor Walter C. Smith gave us this beautiful hymn based on today’s verse from 1 Timothy: Immortal, invisible, God only wise,/ in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,/ most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,/ almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.
If this hymn had existed in Paul’s day, he surely would have sung it passionately. But you can hear his wholehearted belief in God in the words alone of verse 17. There are many things in the Word of God meant to kindle our worship into flame. Paul’s words here do exactly that.
In a world shaken by war, injustice, hunger, natural disasters, etc., we can rest our weary souls on these words describing God’s character. When the hard places of life close in on you, run to the Sovereign Ruler, the “King eternal.”
Part of what often ails us spiritually stems from a failure to focus on who God is. When we’re caught in sin or suffering, overwhelmed with pain and sorrow, we need to see and savor our glorious God who reached down into our lives through His Son, Jesus.
