Enough for Us

“Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ Jesus answered: ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after … such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.’” John 14:8-9

What would “be enough” for you to give your life fully to Jesus and accept His gift of salvation? Would it be just the touch of His clothing, as with the woman in Mark 5:25-34? Would it be just hearing His words, “Peace be still,” as the disciples did in Mark 4:35-41? For Philip it would be one thing: seeing the Father.

Though Philip and the others had been with Jesus for some time, they struggled to understand who He really was. Their doubts and questions rose to the surface, the same way they often do for us. Jesus would patiently teach them, would gently urge them to not let their hearts be troubled, and would give them promise after promise that He’d always be with them.

You and I have likely heard many times of the three-in-one nature of our God, that He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit. But Philip and the others were still trying to wrap their heads around that idea. Jesus told them plainly, “Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me” (v. 11). Rest in this truth, for it is enough!

You are more than enough for us. Thank You for every glimpse of who You are. Help us, Lord, to see even more of You. Amen
