Living “In Him”

“We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding …. We are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” 1 John 5:20

“We are in him.” There is some mystery to a statement like that, especially for a new believer in Jesus Christ. From the day we first came to Jesus, we have been “in him.” Jesus is now the dwelling place of our heart and soul. Because we dwell in Him, He is our life today and is our eternal life beyond this world. All we have comes from His loving hand.

Being “in him” means that we have God’s Holy Spirit living in us. We’re constantly assured that we are not alone and that God’s goodness and faithfulness go with us in every situation. Think of the comfort a little child has knowing that Mommy or Daddy is there. The child may be physically or emotionally afraid of what lies ahead. But with Mom’s voice or Dad’s loving arms, the fear dissipates. That’s a glimpse of what it’s like as we are in Christ, the true God and giver of life.

When we try to push Jesus out and tackle life on our own, we land in a never-ending cycle of reactions and frustrations. Rest in Christ instead, accepting the shelter He gives when you dwell in Him.
