The First Gospel
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Genesis 3:15
When Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, sin entered the world, bringing death, suffering, and brokenness. Work became hard, childbearing became painful, and perfect fellowship with God was gone. The cost of their sin must have felt overwhelming as they faced the consequences of their choice. Their perfect world was marred forever. But amid this hopelessness, God spoke a word of hope—not just a curse to the serpent, but also a promise of redemption to us.
God declared that one day, a child would come from Eve’s line who would crush Satan’s head. Though the serpent would strike His heel, the victory would ultimately belong to Eve’s promised offspring.
This is the first glimpse of the gospel in Scripture— the promise that Jesus, son of Mary, would defeat sin, death, and Satan once and for all. Shortly after this, Eve received her name, “the mother of life,” a reminder that even in judgment, God was pointing forward to the eternal life He’d provide. Even in our darkest moments, God’s promises give us hope. Do you trust in them today?
