Torn Curtains
“At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.” Matthew 27:51
Every good story has threads that are woven through from beginning to end. God does this often in the grand story of Scripture. One such way is with the cherubim that first appear blocking the entrance into Eden after the fall.
As biblical history unfolded, God had the Israelites place a curtain in the tabernacle (later the temple) with cherubim woven into it to guard the dwelling place of God. Ordinary humans like you and me would never be allowed to pass through this curtain … nor would we be able to for its thickness. But something happened when Jesus breathed His last on the cross. At precisely that moment, the curtain was torn in two. It’s as if the cherubim were relieved of their duties because Jesus had made the way for His people to return to the presence of God.
The imagery of cherubim in the garden and throughout the Bible would symbolize our exile from the Lord through Adam’s sin, and our return to Him through Jesus’ righteousness. What other threads do you see throughout Scripture, pointing us to our salvation in Jesus?
