Unafraid, Unashamed
“Then he said, ‘I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’ At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.” Exodus 3:6
I’ve seen it again and again. A student is in my office feeling so ashamed that they cannot raise their head to look me in the eyes. It’s as if the principal’s gaze will confirm to them what they already are feeling inside: that they are unworthy.
I believe this is something that is hardwired into us as fallen, sinful humans. We are often hyper-aware of our guilt. Imagine then, appearing face-to-face with the holy God. In Exodus 3 Moses encounters God in a burning bush. He can’t help but hide his face in fear as he approaches.
Jude tells us that in Christ, we will one day stand before the living God with great joy instead of fear (Jude 1:24). Won’t it be amazing to stand before God knowing that when He looks at you, He sees you as perfect because Jesus is perfect?
This is the truth my students need to hear, and it’s the truth you and I need to remember daily. In Jesus, our fear is turned into rejoicing, and our shame is replaced with grace upon grace. No longer are we unworthy but are valued, loved, and accepted. Now that’s good news!
