Out of the Garden, Into the Wild
“After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”
Genesis 3:24
As a school principal, I sometimes share early information with student leaders—things like dance themes or possible rule changes. They’re responsible for keeping it private until the official announcement. But not infrequently, they spill the news too soon.
Adam was given a far greater responsibility: to guard the Garden of Eden. He was supposed to protect it. When he failed, the serpent entered, Adam sinned, and everything changed. Now, instead of Adam keeping the garden, God placed mighty angels called cherubim to guard it. They blocked the way back to the Tree of Life. What was once Adam’s home became a place he could never return to.
Like Adam, we were created to dwell in God’s eternal presence, but sin has separated us from Him. The good news? One day, the Second Adam— Jesus—would come to restore what was lost, live a perfect life for us, surrender His life as payment for our sins, and open the way back into God’s presence. Until He comes again, we live in a broken world, longing for the home we were made for. Do you feel that longing?
