The One We Proclaim
“We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.”
Colossians 1:28
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a teacher is the power of setting clear objectives. At the beginning of class, students should already know the lesson’s focus and what they are to understand by the end. The same is true of preaching. A good sermon states the sermon’s main point at the beginning and returns to it at the end. This brings clarity, focus, and direction.
In Colossians, Paul makes his objective clear: to “present the word of God in its fullness” (v. 25), showing Jesus to be the center of everything. He is the source of all wisdom, the foundation of spiritual maturity, and the means by which we grow. Paul doesn’t point people to a philosophy, a set of rules, or a religious system. He points them to Christ alone who “is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (v. 17).
Is Jesus at the center of your life? Does your faith revolve around His life, death, and resurrection? Or has something else taken His place? Keep your eyes fixed on Him in all things as He matures you in your faith.
