Two Camps
“Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him. When Jacob saw them, he said, ‘This is the camp of God!’ So he named that place Mahanaim.” Genesis 32:1-2
Have you ever felt like you needed a sign that God was present with you? Jacob had the opportunity to experience God’s presence right when he needed it most.
He was on his way to meet his brother, Esau, whom he had last seen when he deceived him and stole his birthright. Understandably, Jacob was afraid of what his brother might do to him and his family. But seeing the presence of God’s angels in the camp prompted him to fix his eyes on the promise of God (v. 12). If God, who is faithful, had promised Jacob to establish His people through him, then surely no harm would come to his family.
We might not have God’s camp of angels visible in our midst as Jacob did, but we have something greater. Through our union with Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in us. We’re told by Jesus that the Holy Spirit “will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26). When you feel overwhelmed by life’s trials and long for a tangible reminder of God’s presence, ask the Father to strengthen your faith through His Spirit. May your confidence be in Christ!
