A Forever King

“He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” 2 Samuel 7:13b

Some promises made to us seem too good to be true, right? I’ve known many a student who has not been able to follow through on promises made. David wanted very much to be the one to build God a temple, but God declined his offer and countered by promising David that one of his heirs would be established as an eternal king over a forever kingdom.

Too good to be true? This oath was a continuation of the many promises God had already given. An heir who would crush the head of the serpent, who would bless the nations, and who would come from Judah, would be born from David’s very own tribe.

Luke tells us this heir is none other than Jesus. He’s the lion of Judah, the second Adam who has conquered sin once and for all through His perfect life and sacrificial death on the cross. He is King Jesus!

In this life, we will have countless other authorities over us, some good and some not good. But we are promised that ruling over it all is our perfect King whose throne will last forever. Can you imagine a greater king than our promise-keeping Savior?
