Gospel Gossip
“Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.”
Acts 8:4
You can always tell when something big and exciting has happened at school. There are whispers in the hallways and chatter in the classrooms. Everyone is buzzing with the latest update. Did you hear? The lead in the musical is taking his co-star to the dance! Or the star basketball player is out sick for the big game! When you know something worth knowing, it’s natural to want to tell others.
In Acts 8, after Stephen was martyred, the early church had been persecuted and its members forced to scatter. Many lost their homes and families and were on the run for their lives. And yet, how did they respond during what must have been a horrifying and frightful time? They shared the gospel wherever they went—not in formal preaching, but in everyday conversations. Many theologians liken how they “preached the word” to “gossiping” about Jesus, spreading the good news like wildfire.
What if we talked about Jesus like we talk about exciting news at school or work? The gospel is the biggest news of all! Who in your life needs to hear it today?
