The Messiah, the Lord
“The angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy …. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.’” Luke 2:10-11
I love the Advent season with its extra opportunities to worship and enjoy family and friends. I think about it even in August when the school year is just beginning. By December, the staff and students will all feel like we’ve been waiting forever for a break from the school schedule.
But four months of waiting is nothing compared to hundreds of years! I try to put myself in the shoes of an average Israelite at the time of Jesus’ birth. Generation after generation of them longed for the Messiah to arrive. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, there was Christ the Lord.
Did you catch that title, “Christ the Lord”? It was a name reserved for the Promised One, the forever King of Israel. The baby born that night was the Savior who had come at last to rescue His people. The Messiah they’d been waiting for was finally here!
People from every walk of life—from kings to lowly shepherds—were struck with awe at Jesus’ arrival. The wait was over; God’s rescue plan was put into motion. How do you think you would have responded to such startling news?
