Lamech’s Revenge; Christ’s Forgiveness
“Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.’”
Matthew 18:22
A big part of my job as school principal is mediating between students. One has hurt the other, and the offended student wants justice. Whenever someone wrongs us, our natural response is to demand payback.
In Genesis 4, we meet Lamech, a descendant of Cain, who takes revenge to an extreme. He boasts, “If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold” (v. 24). He twists justice into personal vengeance, making himself judge and executioner. Lamech represents the brokenness of human retaliation, justice without mercy.
Jesus turned Lamech’s words upside down when Peter asked Him how many times we should forgive. Jesus replied, “Not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” Where Lamech sought limitless revenge, Jesus calls for unlimited forgiveness. Why? Because His forgiveness knows no bounds. At the cross, He bore the weight of our sin, offering mercy instead of retribution. We don’t forgive because others deserve it. We forgive because Christ first forgave us. Will you extend that kind of forgiveness to someone today?
