Celebrate the Jubilee
“Do not take advantage of each other, but fear your God. I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 25:17
Hebrew law prescribed that every 50 years was a Year of Jubilee. Slaves would be set free; debts would be forgiven; even the land was to rest. Property was to be returned to its original owners or family members. It was a time of new beginnings, regardless of what had occurred in the past 49 years.
The Year of Jubilee no longer exists. Though it was welcomed by many in the Old Testament, I doubt it would be well-received today! Our world functions with oppression of various kinds, with great burdens of debt, and with losses no one would care to replace or undo.
Jesus ushered in a new Jubilee in His Sermon on the Mount. He was the fulfillment of the Law! He set His followers free from indebtedness, proclaiming freedom from the enslavements of greed, anger, worry, and sin.
The tribulations of this life won’t just disappear. But they do not have the last word. The crucified and risen Christ is the conqueror. He reigns over heaven and earth, including the blessings and burdens of your life. Rejoice and celebrate in this truth now and forever!
