Celebrate Promises
“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:4
But you promised! How many times have you heard or said that? A promise has stronger implications than just agreeing to do something. Broken promises break hearts; they shatter relationships. A promise is only as dependable as the one who is making it. Of course, not all promises can be kept even if they are given in sincerity. For example, a soldier cannot honestly promise to come back from war. There are factors beyond his or her human control.
Jesus told His disciples that He had to go away so that the Holy Spirit could come and would be in them and guide them into all truth (see John 14:16,17). On the day of Pentecost, Peter addressed the crowd, promising that the gift of the Holy Spirit was for them and their children and for all the Lord would call (see Acts 2:39). He could guarantee it because he knew of God’s faithfulness.
In a world where people give their word and then go back on it, we have the ever-trustworthy Word of God. Though we often must admit our failure to follow through, we stand on the promises of God which always prevail.
