Celebrate Forgetting
“One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
Forgetfulness is not usually a good thing. I am seeing firsthand how aging brings forgetfulness and uncertainty about present reality. Despite decades of research, scientists have found few answers about how to keep minds alert and focused throughout an entire life span. But today, let’s think instead about things that need to be forgotten.
Paul wanted to forget much that was in his past life. Who could blame him? He’d been full of cruelty and hatred as he pursued believers, imprisoning or killing them. Meeting Jesus gave him an eternal perspective and new passions.
We all have a back story. Many of these stories hold regrets and deep sorrows. The past cannot be changed, but our perspective and response to it can be. It’s possible to learn from mistakes and take a different course. It’s also possible to seek forgiveness from those wronged by our words or actions. Forgetting requires believing wholeheartedly in God’s gift of forgiveness. When we embrace the forgiveness He offers, we can live fully in the present with our eyes on heaven.
