Celebrate the Meal
“And he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.’” Luke 22:15-16
Eating is truly one of life’s delights. I’ve often thought that some of the best meals around the table with treasured family or friends are a foretaste of heaven. The very first human beings knew the pleasure of seeing and partaking of the fruit of the earth.
All four gospel writers record that Jesus gathered with others around a common table for sustenance and fellowship. He was denounced by His enemies for eating with sinners. And of course, at the Last Supper, He brought it to a whole new level. The bread and the cup became symbols of His crucified body and shed blood. Throughout church history, believers have continued to gather at the table of Christ to partake of the bread and the wine. As we do, we affirm our faith and profess His death, resurrection, and return.
After His resurrection, Jesus waited on the beach with bread and fish—fish He Himself prepared over a fire!—to share with His beloved, albeit shocked, disciples. When we think about these things, we realize Jesus brings a sense of sacredness and celebration to eating.
