Celebrate the Seasons
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1
I have always lived in the eastern part of the United States, experiencing the distinct change of seasons. Autumn brings its riot of color as the leaves transform from green to shades of red, yellow, and orange. We relish certain fall flavors and smells during the times of harvest. The intensity of summer heat gives way to frosty mornings and then the sting of winter cold. Even without such pronounced changes, most people sense differences in the varying seasons.
The Ecclesiastes writer talks about seasons more broadly than in regard to weather. He considers every aspect of living under heaven. For everything there is a time. He reminds us that even the start and end of life are cyclical and have their seasons.
Jesus came to give us life, and life to the full (see John 10:10). We know we can follow Him throughout the seasons of our lives—some which we would never have chosen—because it is He who makes our days rich in Him. As the years go on, God’s children “will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green” (Psalm 92:14).
