Celebrate Heritage
“There above it stood the LORD and he said: ‘I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.’” Genesis 28:13
I am aware of only two people from previous generations in my family line who walked in faith. But I believe there were others who may have prayed for the generations to come. Some of you have a heritage of faith that goes far back, while some of you are, to your knowledge, the first of your family’s believers. But no matter where you have been or who came before you, you are found by the God of Abraham and grafted into His family line.
Isaac saw his son Jacob off with a blessing and words of wisdom. Jacob would leave to start a new life and to seek a wife. He was to be fruitful, increase in numbers, and become a community of people who would have the blessing of Abraham upon them. On the way, he camped one night using a stone for a pillow and there had a dream which reminded him he was not alone. Surely, God was with Jacob as He had been with his father and grandfather.
This same heritage belongs to us through Jesus Christ. “Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham” (Galatians 3:7).
