Celebrate the Walk
“And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” 2 John v. 6
Typically in the course of human growth, walking develops naturally. First comes crawling, then eventually the feet are on the ground moving toward people or desired objects. Many commands are given to a newly-walking child, for safety’s sake. Obedience is learned and expected.
I love the metaphor in Scripture that compares the believer’s life to walking. We find it throughout the Old and New Testaments. Psalm 1 cautions us not to walk in the counsel of the wicked. Just as we might tell our children not to get into a car with a stranger, so God gives many warnings for our protection.
But Jesus clearly taught that the path of love toward God, our neighbor, and even our enemies was the place to walk out our earthly journey. It’s not an easy highway to tread! We are more prone to take detours on roads of resentment, anger, and defiance. Yet just as a baby falls often while learning to walk, so we too may stumble. Jesus’ voice can be heard calling us back to the path of righteousness, giving us what is needed to walk uprightly.
