What Tunnels Teach
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1
I love driving through tunnels. In advance of one, you’ll read road signs stating what is prohibited or what size vehicle won’t fit. Drivers must pay attention to avoid a disaster.
Such signs are a metaphor in our life journey, too. Notice what is weighing you down or what you should eliminate. Today’s Hebrews passage urges us to throw off sin and all that hinders. Some of what we lug around isn’t necessarily bad. Yet it sets us back in our journey with Jesus. During seminary, I gave up doing radio play-by-play of a local high school’s games because it took time away from studying, preparing for ministry, and deepening my relationship with the Lord.
Are there commitments you can reconsider? Hobbies or special interests that fill all your free time? Are you always helping others when it would be wise to sometimes decline? Even service work or church volunteering can overwhelm to the point of compromising your relationship with Jesus.
When we travel through that final tunnel and on to glory, may He find us ready and fully devoted to Him!
