Thanks for the Wreck
“In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son.” Romans 8:28-29
We were in the market for a different car. A wonderful man in our congregation sold cars and was happy to work with us. Once we found one we liked, he allowed us to check it out and drive it around downtown to run a couple of errands. We parked on the street, but when we came back, the car had a huge dent in the side! That kind salesman had taken a risk with us, and all he got in return was damaged goods.
Were we ever grateful to receive his grace-filled response: “It’s okay. It happens.” It sure does! The incident reminded me later of how God takes risks with us every day. He loans us children, talents, gifts, and resources. He gives us the gospel to share. But so often we return damaged goods to Him.
But I also learned that “When you wreck it, thank God.” It’s a sign of His grace that He trusts us enough to keep taking risks with us. Thank Him for loving you enough to give you unlimited chances. Yes, be responsible. But when you “wreck it,” thank God who works all things for the good of those who love Him, even people like you and me!
