Life in the Shadows
“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” Psalm 17:8
Our family was in Washington, D.C., and it was a scorcher—hot enough to melt blacktop pavement and make national headlines! We planned our walking routes with periodic shade in mind. Later I thought of how David prayed, “Hide me in the shadow of your wings” and of the psalmist who proclaimed, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. … He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge” (Psalm 91:1, 4).
As Jesus hung on the cross, His arms—His wings, so to speak—were spread, offering refuge and relief in their shadow for all who come to Him. He has longed to gather us under his wings as a hen gathers her chicks (see Matthew 23:37).
“Under His wings I am safely abiding,/ Though the night deepens and tempests are wild./ Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,/ He has redeemed me, and I am His child./ Under His wings, under His wings,/ Who from His love can sever?/ Under His wings my soul shall abide,/ Safely abide forever” (William Cushing, 1896).
