The Spin Cycle
“[The kingdom of heaven] will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” Matthew 25:14
I’ll never forget a time I had to slam on the brakes while traveling on the highway. My car skidded out of control and headed for the ditch and the median. Amazingly, I spun 360 degrees and came to a stop still on our side of the highway, with the car sitting perpendicular across the centerline. All cars miraculously avoided me, and everyone was safe.
That “spin cycle” led to much grateful, challenging contemplation, especially about Jesus’ parable of the talents. Through prayerful reflection, I began to recognize all that God through Jesus had entrusted to me. I was led to examine and re-establish my priorities. I decided to more deliberately serve and share Jesus. I sought to strengthen my relationship with Him and with my loved ones. I sincerely desired to live out of an attitude of gratitude.
A particular line of the parable still visits me: “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them” (v. 19). We do not know the day or the hour of Jesus’ return or of when He’ll call us home. Are you ready?
