A Hard Easter Weekend
“The Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says to the people, “Come back and quietly trust in me. Then you will be strong and secure.” Isaiah 30:15 (Good News Translation)
It was a taxing Easter weekend for me. I preached at Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services, at a Saturday funeral, at morning and evening services Easter Sunday, and at another funeral Monday. I was physically exhausted, and I knew on Tuesday that I had to start preparing another sermon.
Yet I felt refreshed on Tuesday morning! As I pondered this, the Spirit revealed the reasons: I’d spent more time in prayer and meditation throughout those days than I normally did, and more people were praying for me than usual. I was strong and secure because God granted me spiritual rest, a rest promised throughout Scripture. Isaiah 30:15 lays the foundation. Jesus built on it when He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Peter affirmed it with, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
When your schedule is horrendous and the burdens are heavy, rest in Jesus. He bore the greatest burden of our sin for us so that we have the hope of eternal rest in Him.
