Knowing Who You Are
“But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.’” Isaiah 43:1
We were in a restaurant with one of our young granddaughters, and my wife was helping her order her entree. Our granddaughter didn’t want a selection from the kids’ menu; she was determined to have something from the adult menu. So, with Grandma’s permission, she did! After the waitress brought the food to us, our granddaughter looked at her serving and said with a brilliant smile, “I have an adult plate!” Whether or not she would enjoy the food didn’t matter—she felt like an adult.
It reminded me of how my worth doesn’t depend on my age or status, but on whose I am. And I know the answer to that without a doubt:
I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has also set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: in fact, all things must work together for my salvation (The Heidelberg Catechism Answer #1).
