Stumbling Into Truth
“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. … By them is your servant warned.” Psalm 19:8, 11
I was at a crowded conference when I heard a commotion and turned to see people helping a man who had fallen by the escalators. I later learned that he was stepping onto an up escalator, thinking it was the down escalator. It seems he’d been busy texting while he was walking and didn’t even notice the danger in front of him. That distraction could have caused him a lot more trouble than it did!
Actually, the man stumbled into a powerful truth expressed by the psalmist: “Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble” (119:165, New Living Translation). God’s Word keeps us from stepping into the wrong places and from crossing dangerous thresholds as it points out the sin around us. It gives light to our eyes so we can see what’s before and around us.
Try to be faithful in reading the Bible, though the devil wants to distract you from doing so. You’ll find yourself focusing more on the truths God has given and trusting that He has spoken through His Word because of His deep and abiding love for us.
