The Anger of Yahweh
Aleph
2 How the Lord has (A)covered the daughter of Zion
With a cloud in His anger!
He has (B)cast from heaven to earth
The (C)beauty of Israel,
And has not remembered the (D)footstool of His feet
In the day of His anger.
Beth
2 The Lord has (E)swallowed up; He has not spared
All the habitations of Jacob.
In His wrath He has (F)pulled down
The strongholds of the daughter of Judah;
He has (G)brought them down to the ground;
He has (H)profaned the kingdom and its princes.
Gimel
3 In [a]hot anger He has cut in pieces
[b]All the (I)strength of Israel;
He has (J)turned back His right hand
From before the enemy.
And He has (K)burned in Jacob like a flaming fire
Devouring round about.
Daleth
4 He has bent His (L)bow like an enemy;
He has set His right hand like an adversary
And killed all that were (M)desirable to the eye;
In the tent of the daughter of Zion
He has (N)poured out His wrath like fire.
He
5 The Lord has become like an (O)enemy.
He has (P)swallowed up Israel;
He has swallowed up all its (Q)palaces;
He has brought its strongholds to ruin
And (R)multiplied in the daughter of Judah
Mourning and moaning.
Vav
6 And He has violently treated His [c]tabernacle like a garden booth;
He has (S)brought His appointed [d]meeting place to ruin.
Yahweh has (T)caused to be forgotten
The appointed time and sabbath in Zion,
And He has (U)spurned king and priest
In the indignation of His anger.
Zayin
7 The Lord has (V)rejected His altar;
He has abandoned His sanctuary;
He (W)has delivered into the hand of the enemy
The walls of her palaces.
They have made a (X)noise in the house of Yahweh
As in the day of an appointed time.
Heth
8 Yahweh [e]determined to bring to ruin
The wall of the daughter of Zion.
He has (Y)stretched out a line;
He has not turned His hand back from swallowing up,
And He has (Z)caused rampart and wall to mourn;
They have languished together.
Teth
9 Her (AA)gates have sunk into the ground;
He has destroyed and broken her bars.
Her king and her princes are among the nations;
The (AB)law is no more.
Also, her prophets find
(AC)No vision from Yahweh.
Yodh
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
(AD)Sit on the ground; they (AE)are silent.
They have thrown (AF)dust up on their heads;
They have girded themselves with (AG)sackcloth.
The (AH)virgins of Jerusalem
Have bowed their heads down to the ground.
Kaph
11 My (AI)eyes fail because of tears;
My [f](AJ)inmost being is greatly disturbed;
My [g](AK)heart is poured out on the earth
(AL)Because of the [h]destruction of the daughter of my people,
When (AM)infants and nursing babies faint
In the open squares of the city.
Lamedh
12 They say to their mothers,
“(AN)Where is grain and wine?”
As they faint like a wounded man
In the open squares of the city,
As their (AO)life is poured out
On their mothers’ bosom.
Mem
13 What shall I testify about you?
To what (AP)shall I equate you,
O daughter of Jerusalem?
To what shall I liken you as I comfort you,
O (AQ)virgin daughter of Zion?
For your [i]destruction is as vast as the sea;
Who can (AR)heal you?
Nun
14 Your (AS)prophets have beheld for you
Worthless and ineffective visions;
And they have not (AT)uncovered your iniquity
So as to [j]return you from captivity,
But they have (AU)beheld for you worthless and misleading [k]oracles.
Samekh
15 All who pass along the way
(AV)Clap their hands in derision at you;
They (AW)hiss and shake their heads
At the daughter of Jerusalem,
“Is this the city of which they said,
‘(AX)The perfection of beauty,
(AY)The joy of the whole earth’?”
Pe
16 All (AZ)your enemies
Have opened their mouths wide against you;
They hiss and (BA)gnash their teeth.
They say, “We have (BB)swallowed her up!
Surely this is the (BC)day for which we have hoped;
We have found it, we have seen it.”
Ayin
17 Yahweh has (BD)done what He purposed;
He has completed His word
Which He commanded from days of old.
He has pulled down (BE)without sparing,
And He has caused the enemy to (BF)be glad over you;
He has (BG)exalted the [l]might of your adversaries.
Tsadhe
18 Their (BH)heart cried out to the Lord,
“O (BI)wall of the daughter of Zion,
Let your (BJ)tears run down like a river day and night;
Give yourself no relief;
Let [m]your eyes not be still.
Qoph
19 Arise, cry aloud in the (BK)night
At the head of the night watches;
(BL)Pour out your heart like water
Before the presence of the Lord;
Lift up your hands to Him
For the (BM)life of your infants
Who are (BN)faint because of hunger
At the head of every street.”
Resh
20 See, O Yahweh, and look!
With (BO)whom have You dealt thus?
Should women (BP)eat their [n]offspring,
The infants who were [o]born healthy?
Should (BQ)priest and prophet be killed
In the sanctuary of the Lord?
Shin
21 On the ground in the streets
Lie (BR)young and old;
My (BS)virgins and my young men
Have fallen by the sword.
You have killed them in the day of Your anger;
You have slaughtered, (BT)not sparing.
Tav
22 You called as in the day of an appointed time
My (BU)terrors on every side;
And there was (BV)no one who escaped or survived
In the day of Yahweh’s anger.
Those (BW)whom I [p]gave birth to and reared,
My enemy consumed them.
Jeremiah’s Heavy Chain
Aleph
3 I am the man who has (BX)seen affliction
Because of the rod of His wrath.
2 He has driven me and made me walk
In (BY)darkness and not in light.
3 Surely against me He has (BZ)turned His hand
Repeatedly all the day.
Beth
4 He has caused my (CA)flesh and my skin to waste away;
He has (CB)broken my bones.
5 He has (CC)besieged and encompassed me with (CD)gall and hardship.
6 (CE)Dark places He has made me inhabit,
Like those who have long been dead.
Gimel
7 He has (CF)walled me in so that I cannot go out;
He has made my [q](CG)chain heavy.
8 Even when I cry out and call for help,
He (CH)shuts out my prayer.
9 He has (CI)blocked my ways with cut stone;
He has made my paths crooked.
Daleth
10 He is to me like a bear lying in wait,
Like a lion in secret places.
11 He has turned aside my ways and (CJ)torn me to pieces;
He has made me desolate.
12 He (CK)bent His bow
And (CL)set me as a target for the arrow.
He
13 He made the [r]arrows of His (CM)quiver
To enter into my [s]inward parts.
14 I have become a (CN)laughingstock to all my people,
Their (CO)music of mockery all the day.
15 He has (CP)saturated me with bitterness;
He has sated me with wormwood.
Vav
16 He has (CQ)broken my teeth with (CR)gravel;
He has made me cower in the (CS)dust.
17 My soul has been rejected (CT)from peace;
I have forgotten goodness.
18 So I say, “My strength has perished,
As well as my (CU)hopeful waiting which comes from Yahweh.”
The Lord Will Not Reject Forever
Zayin
19 Remember my affliction and my [t]homelessness, the (CV)wormwood and gall.
20 Surely (CW)my soul remembers
And is (CX)bowed down within me.
21 This I will return to my heart;
Therefore I will (CY)wait in hope.
Heth
22 The (CZ)lovingkindnesses of Yahweh [u]indeed never cease,
(DA)For His compassions never fail.
23 They are new (DB)every morning;
Great is (DC)Your faithfulness.
24 “Yahweh is my (DD)portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I (DE)wait for Him.”
Teth
25 Yahweh is good to those who (DF)hope in Him,
To the soul who (DG)seeks Him.
26 It is good that he (DH)waits silently
For the salvation of Yahweh.
27 It is good for a man that he should bear
The yoke in his youth.
Yodh
28 Let him (DI)sit alone and be silent
Since He has laid it on him.
29 Let him [v]put his mouth in the (DJ)dust;
Perhaps there is (DK)hope.
30 Let him give his (DL)cheek to the one who strikes him;
Let him be saturated with reproach.
Kaph
31 For the Lord will (DM)not reject forever,
32 For if He causes grief,
Then He will have (DN)compassion
According to His abundant lovingkindness.
33 For He (DO)does not afflict from His heart
Or grieve the sons of men.
Lamedh
34 To crush under His feet
All the prisoners of the [w]land,
35 To [x]deprive a man of (DP)justice
In the presence of the Most High,
36 To [y](DQ)defraud a man in his legal case—
These things the Lord does not see with approval.
Mem
37 Who is [z]there who speaks and it (DR)happens,
Unless the Lord has commanded it?
38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
That (DS)both calamities and [aa]good go forth?
39 Why should any living [ab]person or any man
(DT)Complain because of his sins?
Nun
40 Let us (DU)search out and examine our ways,
And let us return to Yahweh.
41 We (DV)lift up our heart to our hands
Toward God in heaven;
42 We have (DW)transgressed and rebelled;
You have (DX)not pardoned.
Samekh
43 You have covered Yourself with (DY)anger
And (DZ)pursued us;
You have killed and (EA)have not spared.
44 You have (EB)covered Yourself with a cloud
So that (EC)no prayer can pass through.
45 You have made us mere (ED)scum and refuse
In the midst of the peoples.
Pe
46 All our enemies have (EE)opened their mouths against us.
47 (EF)Panic and pitfall have befallen us,
Devastation and destruction;
48 My [ac](EG)eyes run down with streams of water
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Ayin
49 My eyes pour down (EH)unceasingly,
Without stopping,
50 Until Yahweh (EI)looks down
And sees from heaven.
51 My eyes deal severely with my soul
Because of all the daughters of my city.
Tsadhe
52 My enemies (EJ)without cause
Hunted me down (EK)like a bird;
53 They have silenced my life (EL)in the pit
And have [ad](EM)placed a stone on me.
54 Waters flowed (EN)over my head;
I said, “I am cut off!”
Qoph
55 I (EO)called on Your name, O Yahweh,
Out of the lowest pit.
56 You have (EP)heard my voice,
“(EQ)Do not hide Your ear from my prayer for relief,
From my cry for help.”
57 You (ER)drew near when I called on You;
You said, “(ES)Do not fear!”
Resh
58 O Lord, You (ET)have pleaded my soul’s cause;
You have (EU)redeemed my life.
59 O Yahweh, You have (EV)seen my oppression;
(EW)Judge my case.
60 You have seen all their vengeance,
All their (EX)purposes against me.
Sin / Shin
61 You have heard their (EY)reproach, O Yahweh,
All their purposes against me.
62 The (EZ)lips of those who rise against me and their whispering
Are against me all day long.
63 Look on their (FA)sitting and their rising;
(FB)I am their mocking song.
Tav
64 You will (FC)recompense them, O Yahweh,
According to the work of their hands.
65 You will give them [ae](FD)dullness of heart;
Your curse will be on them.
66 You will (FE)pursue them in anger and destroy them
From under the (FF)heavens of Yahweh!
Yahweh’s Wrath Spent
Aleph
4 How (FG)dark the gold has become,
How the pure gold has changed!
The sacred stones are poured out
At the head of every street.
Beth
2 The precious sons of Zion,
Weighed against fine gold,
How they are regarded as (FH)earthen jars,
The work of a potter’s hands!
Gimel
3 Even (FI)jackals offer the breast;
They nurse their young;
But the daughter of my people has become (FJ)cruel
Like (FK)ostriches in the wilderness.
Daleth
4 The (FL)tongue of the nursing baby cleaves
To the roof of its mouth because of (FM)thirst;
The infants (FN)ask for bread,
But no one breaks it for them.
He
5 Those who ate (FO)delicacies
Are desolate in the streets;
Those [af]reared in crimson
Embrace ash pits.
Vav
6 So the [ag]iniquity of the daughter of my people
Is greater than the [ah](FP)sin of Sodom,
Which was (FQ)overthrown as in a moment,
And no hands [ai]whirled toward her.
Zayin
7 Her [aj]Nazirites were (FR)purer than snow;
They were whiter than milk;
They were more ruddy in [ak]body than corals,
Their polishing was like [al](FS)lapis lazuli.
Heth
8 Their form is (FT)blacker than soot;
They are not recognized in the streets;
Their (FU)skin is shriveled on their bones;
It is withered, it has become like wood.
Teth
9 Better are those (FV)pierced through with the sword
Than those pierced through with hunger;
For their life (FW)flows away, being stricken
For lack of the produce of [am]the field.
Yodh
10 The hands of compassionate women
(FX)Boiled their own children;
They became (FY)food for them
Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Kaph
11 Yahweh has (FZ)spent His wrath;
He has poured out His burning anger;
And He has (GA)kindled a fire in Zion
Which has devoured its foundations.
Lamedh
12 The kings of the earth did not believe,
Nor did any of (GB)the inhabitants of the world,
That the adversary and the enemy
Could (GC)enter the gates of Jerusalem.
Mem
13 Because of the sins of her (GD)prophets
And the iniquities of her priests,
Who have shed in her midst
The (GE)blood of the righteous;
Nun
14 They wandered, (GF)blind, in the streets;
They were defiled with (GG)blood
So that no one could touch their (GH)garments.
Samekh
15 “Depart! (GI)Unclean!” [an]they cried of themselves.
“Depart, depart, do not touch!”
So they (GJ)fled and wandered;
Men among the nations said,
“They shall not continue to sojourn with us.”
Pe
16 The presence of Yahweh has eradicated them;
He will not continue to look at them;
They did not [ao](GK)honor the priests;
They did not favor the elders.
Ayin
17 Yet our eyes were spent,
Looking for [ap]help was (GL)vanity;
In our watching we have watched
For a (GM)nation that could not save.
Tsadhe
18 They (GN)hunted our steps
So that we could not walk in our open squares;
Our (GO)end drew near,
Our days were [aq]finished,
For our end had come.
Qoph
19 Our pursuers were (GP)swifter
Than the eagles of the sky;
They hotly pursued us on the mountains;
They waited in ambush for us in the wilderness.
Resh
20 The (GQ)breath of our nostrils, the (GR)anointed of Yahweh,
Was (GS)captured in their pits,
Of whom we had said, “Under his (GT)shadow
We shall live among the nations.”
Sin
21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of (GU)Edom,
Who inhabits the land of Uz;
But the (GV)cup will pass on to you as well;
You will become drunk and make yourself naked.
Tav
22 The punishment of your iniquity has come (GW)to an end, O daughter of Zion;
He will exile you no longer.
But He (GX)will punish your iniquity, O daughter of Edom;
He will expose your sins!
O Yahweh, Remember Us!
5 Remember, O Yahweh, what has happened to us;
Look, and see our (GY)reproach!
2 Our inheritance has been turned over to (GZ)strangers,
Our (HA)houses to foreigners.
3 We have become orphans (HB)without a father;
Our mothers are like widows.
4 We drink our (HC)water by means of silver;
Our wood comes to us at a price.
5 [ar]Our pursuers are at our necks;
We are worn out; there is (HD)no rest for us.
6 We have given over our [as]hands to (HE)Egypt and Assyria [at]to get enough bread.
7 Our (HF)fathers sinned; they are no more;
It is we who have borne their iniquities.
8 (HG)Slaves rule over us;
There is (HH)no one to tear us away from their hand.
9 We get our bread [au]at the (HI)risk of our lives
[av]Because of the sword in the wilderness.
10 Our skin has become as (HJ)hot as an oven
Because of [aw]the burning heat of famine.
11 They violated the (HK)women in Zion,
The virgins in the cities of Judah.
12 Princes were hung by their hands;
[ax](HL)Elders were not respected.
13 Young men (HM)lifted up the stone at the grinding mill,
And youths (HN)stumbled down under loads of wood.
14 Elders have ceased from being at the gate,
Young men from their (HO)music.
15 The joy of our hearts has (HP)ceased;
Our dancing has been turned into mourning.
16 The (HQ)crown has fallen from our head;
(HR)Woe to us, for we have sinned!
17 Because of this our (HS)heart is faint;
Because of these things our (HT)eyes are dim;
18 Because of (HU)Mount Zion which lies desolate,
(HV)Foxes walk about in it.
19 (HW)You, O Yahweh, sit enthroned forever;
Your (HX)throne is from generation to generation.
20 Why do You (HY)forget us forever?
Why do You forsake us [ay]so long?
21 (HZ)Cause us to return to You, O Yahweh, that we may be returned;
Renew (IA)our days as of old,
22 Even if (IB)You have utterly rejected us
And are exceedingly (IC)angry with us.
The Vision of Four Living Creatures
1 Now it happened in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the (ID)river Chebar among the exiles, that the (IE)heavens were opened, and I saw [az](IF)visions of God. 2 (On the fifth of the month [ba]in the (IG)fifth year of King Jehoiachin’s exile, 3 the (IH)word of [bb]Yahweh came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, in the (II)land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there (IJ)the hand of Yahweh came upon him.)
4 Then I looked, and behold, a (IK)storm wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually and a bright light all around it, and in its midst something like the gleam of (IL)glowing metal in the midst of the fire. 5 And within it there were figures with the likeness of (IM)four living creatures. And this was their appearance: they had the (IN)likeness of a man. 6 And each of them had (IO)four faces and (IP)four wings. 7 And their legs were straight, and [bc]their feet were like a calf’s hoof, and they sparkled like the gleam of (IQ)burnished bronze. 8 And under their wings on their (IR)four sides were (IS)hands of a man. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, 9 their wings touched one another; their faces did (IT)not turn as they went; each (IU)went straight forward. 10 And as for the (IV)likeness of their faces, each had the (IW)face of a man; [bd]all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and [be]all four had the face of an eagle. 11 And such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and (IX)two covering their bodies. 12 And (IY)each went straight forward; (IZ)wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went. 13 [bf]As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of (JA)fire, [bg]like the appearance of torches going back and forth among the living creatures. The fire was bright, and lightning was [bh]flashing from the fire. 14 And the living creatures (JB)ran to and fro with the appearance of (JC)lightning.
15 Then I looked at the living creatures, and behold, there was one (JD)wheel on the earth beside the living creatures, [bi]for each of the four of them. 16 The (JE)appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like the gleam of (JF)beryl, and all four of them had the same likeness, their appearance and workmanship being as if [bj]one wheel were within another. 17 Whenever they went, they went in any of their four [bk]directions without (JG)turning as they went. 18 And as for their rims, they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were (JH)full of eyes all around. 19 (JI)And when the living creatures went, the wheels went beside them. And when the living creatures (JJ)rose from the earth, the wheels rose also. 20 (JK)Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction, [bl]where the spirit was about to go. And the wheels rose alongside of them; for the spirit of the living [bm]creatures was in the wheels. 21 (JL)Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living [bn]creatures was in the wheels.
The Vision of the Glory of Yahweh
22 Now (JM)over the heads of the living [bo]creatures there was something with the likeness of an expanse, like the awesome gleam of [bp]crystal, spread out over their heads above. 23 And underneath the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward the other; each one also had (JN)two wings covering its body on the one side and on the other. 24 I also heard the sound of their wings like the (JO)sound of many waters as they went, like the [bq](JP)sound of [br]the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the (JQ)sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings. 25 And there came a sound from above the (JR)expanse that was over their heads; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings.
26 Now (JS)above the expanse that was over their heads there was something in the (JT)likeness of a throne, like (JU)sapphire stone in appearance; and upon the likeness of the throne, high up, was the likeness of one with the appearance of a (JV)man. 27 Then I saw from the appearance of His loins and upward something (JW)like the gleam of [bs]glowing metal with the appearance of fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something with the appearance of fire; and there was a radiance all around Him. 28 As the appearance of the (JX)rainbow [bt]in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the radiance all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the (JY)glory of Yahweh. And I saw this, and I (JZ)fell on my face and heard a sound of a voice speaking.
The Sending of Ezekiel
2 Then He said to me, “Son of man, (KA)stand on your feet that I may speak with you!” 2 And as He spoke to me, the (KB)Spirit entered me and caused me to stand on my feet; and I heard Him speaking to me. 3 Then He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the sons of Israel, to a rebellious people who have (KC)rebelled against Me; (KD)they and their fathers have transgressed against Me to this very day. 4 I am sending you to them who are [bu](KE)stiff-[bv]faced and strong-hearted children, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh.’ 5 As for them, (KF)whether they listen or whether they refuse—for they are a rebellious house—they will (KG)know that a prophet has been among them. 6 Now as for you, son of man, (KH)do not fear them and do not fear their words, though (KI)thistles and briers are with you and you sit on scorpions; neither fear their words nor be dismayed at their presence, for they are a rebellious house. 7 But you shall (KJ)speak My words to them (KK)whether they listen or whether they refuse, for they are rebellious.
8 “Now as for you, son of man, listen to what I am speaking to you; do not be rebellious like that rebellious house. Open your mouth and (KL)eat what I am giving you.” 9 Then I looked, and behold, a (KM)hand was sent forth to me; and behold, a [bw](KN)scroll was in it. 10 Then He spread it out before me, and it was written on the front and back, and written on it were lamentations, sighing, and (KO)woe.
Ezekiel Sent to the House of Israel
3 Then He said to me, “Son of man, eat what you find; (KP)eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel.” 2 So I (KQ)opened my mouth, and He [bx]fed me this scroll. 3 And He said to me, “Son of man, [by]feed your stomach and (KR)fill your [bz]body with this scroll which I am giving you.” Then I (KS)ate it, and it was sweet as (KT)honey in my mouth.
4 Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now, come to the house of Israel, and you shall speak with My words to them. 5 For (KU)you are not being sent to a people of [ca](KV)unintelligible lips or a difficult tongue, but to the house of Israel, 6 nor to many peoples of [cb]unintelligible lips or a difficult tongue, whose words you cannot [cc]understand. [cd]But I have sent you to them [ce]who should listen to you; 7 yet the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, since they are (KW)not willing to listen to Me. Surely the whole house of Israel is [cf]stubborn with a strong forehead and stiff heart. 8 Behold, I have made your face as strong as their faces and your forehead as strong as their foreheads. 9 Like [cg]diamond stronger than flint I have made your forehead. Do not be afraid of them or be dismayed before them, though they are a rebellious house.” 10 Moreover, He said to me, “Son of man, take into your heart all My (KX)words which I will speak to you and listen with your ears. 11 And go now, come to the exiles, to the sons of your people, and you shall speak to them and say to them, whether they listen or whether they refuse, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh.’”
12 Then the (KY)Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great (KZ)rumbling sound behind me, “Blessed be the glory of Yahweh [ch]in His place.” 13 And I heard the sound of the wings of the living creatures touching one another and the sound of the (LA)wheels beside them, even a great rumbling sound. 14 So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away; and I went embittered in the wrath of my spirit, and (LB)the hand of Yahweh was strong on me. 15 Then I came to the exiles who lived beside the river Chebar at Tel-abib, and I sat there (LC)seven days where they were living, causing [ci]consternation among them.
16 (LD)Now it happened at the end of seven days, that the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 17 “Son of man, I have given you as a (LE)watchman to the house of Israel; so you will hear a word from My mouth, and you shall (LF)warn them from Me. 18 When I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his (LG)blood I will require at your hand. 19 Yet if you have (LH)warned the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have (LI)delivered yourself. 20 Again, (LJ)when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and does evil, and I put a (LK)stumbling block before him, he will die; since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteous deeds which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. 21 However, if you have (LL)warned [cj]the righteous man that the righteous should not sin and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he took warning; and you have delivered yourself.”
22 And the hand of Yahweh was on me there, and He said to me, “Get up, go out to the plain, and there I will (LM)speak to you.” 23 So I got up and went out to the plain; and behold, the (LN)glory of Yahweh was standing there, like the glory which (LO)I saw by the river Chebar, and I fell on my face. 24 The (LP)Spirit then entered me and caused me to stand on my feet, and He spoke with me and said to me, “Go, shut yourself up in your house. 25 Now as for you, son of man, they will (LQ)put ropes on you and bind you with them so that you cannot go out among them. 26 Moreover, (LR)I will make your tongue cling to [ck]the roof of your mouth so that you will be mute and cannot be a man who reproves them, for they are a rebellious house. 27 But (LS)when I speak to you, I will open your mouth, and you will say to them, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh.’ He who hears, let him hear; and he who refuses, let him refuse; (LT)for they are a rebellious house.
Ezekiel Bears Israel’s Iniquity
4 “Now as for you, son of man, (LU)get yourself a brick, set it before you, and inscribe a city on it, Jerusalem. 2 Then (LV)set a siege against it, build a siege wall against it, [cl]raise up a ramp against it, set up camps against it, and place battering rams against it all around. 3 Now as for you, get yourself an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city, and establish your face toward it so that (LW)it is under siege, and besiege it. This is a (LX)sign to the house of Israel.
4 “Now as for you, lie down on your left side and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel on it; you shall (LY)bear their iniquity for the number of days that you lie on it. 5 Now I have set a number of days for you corresponding to the years of their iniquity, 390 days; thus (LZ)you shall bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. 6 And you shall complete these, and you shall lie down a second time, but on your right side and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah; I have set it for you for forty days, a day for (MA)each year. 7 Then you shall establish your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and (MB)prophesy against it. 8 Now behold, I will (MC)set ropes upon you so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have completed the days of your siege.
Making Unclean Bread
9 “Now as for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and (MD)spelt; set them in one vessel and make them into bread for yourself; you shall eat it according to the number of the days that you lie on your side, 390 days. 10 And your food which you eat shall be [cm](ME)twenty shekels a day by weight; you shall eat it from time to time. 11 The water you drink shall be the sixth part of a [cn]hin by measure; you shall drink it from time to time. 12 You shall eat it as a barley cake, having baked it in their sight over human (MF)dung.” 13 Then Yahweh said, “Thus will the sons of Israel eat their bread (MG)unclean among the nations where I will banish them.” 14 But I said, “(MH)Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, I have (MI)never been defiled; for from my youth until now I have never eaten what (MJ)died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has any (MK)offensive meat ever entered my mouth.” 15 Then He said to me, “See, I will set for you cow’s dung in place of human dung over which you will prepare your bread.” 16 Moreover, He said to me, “Son of man, behold, I am going to (ML)break the staff of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by (MM)weight and with anxiety, and they will drink water by (MN)measure and in desolation 17 because bread and water will be lacking; and they will be in desolation with one another and (MO)rot away in their iniquity.
The Siege of Jerusalem
5 “Now as for you, son of man, take a (MP)sharp sword; take and [co]use it as a barber’s razor on your head and beard. Then take (MQ)scales for weighing and divide [cp]the hair. 2 One-third you shall burn in the fire at the center of the city when the (MR)days of the siege are fulfilled. Then you shall take one-third and strike it with the sword all around [cq]the city, and one-third you shall scatter to the wind; and I will (MS)unsheathe a sword behind them. 3 You shall also take a few in number from [cr]them and bind them in the edges of your robes. 4 Take again some of them and throw them into the fire and burn them in the fire; from it a fire will [cs]spread to all the house of Israel.
5 “Thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘This is (MT)Jerusalem; I have set her at the (MU)center of the nations, with lands all around her. 6 But she has rebelled against My judgments more wickedly than the nations and against My statutes (MV)more than the lands which are all around her; for they have (MW)rejected My judgments and have not walked [ct]in My statutes.’ 7 Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Because you have (MX)more turmoil than the nations which are all around you and have not walked in My statutes, nor done My judgments, nor done the judgments of the nations which are all around you,’ 8 therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Behold, I, even I, am (MY)against you, and I will (MZ)execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations. 9 And I will do among you what I have (NA)not done and the like of which I will never do again because of all your abominations. 10 Therefore, (NB)fathers will eat their sons among you, and sons will eat their fathers; for I will execute judgments on you and (NC)scatter all your remnant to every wind. 11 So as I live,’ declares Lord Yahweh, ‘surely, because you have (ND)defiled My sanctuary with all your (NE)detestable idols and with all your abominations, therefore I will also withdraw, and My eye will have no pity, and I will not spare. 12 One-third of you will die by the (NF)plague or be consumed by the famine among you, one-third will fall by the sword around you, and one-third I will (NG)scatter to every wind, and I will (NH)unsheathe a sword behind them.
13 ‘Thus My anger will be spent, and I will cause My wrath against them to be at rest, and I will be [cu](NI)appeased; then they will know that I, Yahweh, have (NJ)spoken in My zeal when I have spent My wrath upon them. 14 Moreover, I will make you a [cv]ruin and a (NK)reproach among the nations which are all around you, in the sight of all who pass by. 15 So [cw]it will be a reproach, a reviling, a (NL)chastisement, and a desecration to the nations who are all around you when I (NM)execute judgments against you in anger, wrath, and wrathful reproofs. I, Yahweh, have spoken. 16 When I send against them the [cx]deadly arrows of famine which [cy]were for the destruction of those whom I will send to destroy you, then I will also intensify the famine upon you and break the staff of bread. 17 Moreover, (NN)I will send on you famine and wild beasts, and they will bereave you of children; (NO)plague and bloodshed also will pass through you, and I will bring the sword on you. I, Yahweh, have spoken.’”
Yahweh Will Destroy Israel’s Pagan Altars
6 And the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face toward the (NP)mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them 3 and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of Lord Yahweh! Thus says Lord Yahweh to the mountains, the hills, the ravines, and the valleys: “Behold, I Myself am going to bring a sword on you, and (NQ)I will destroy your high places. 4 So your (NR)altars will become desolate, and your incense altars will be broken; and I will make your slain fall in front of your idols. 5 I will also put the dead bodies of the sons of Israel in front of their idols; and I will scatter your (NS)bones all around your altars. 6 In all your places of habitation, (NT)cities will become waste, and the high places will be desolate, that your altars may become waste and [cz]desolate, your (NU)idols may be broken and cease, your incense altars may be cut in pieces, and your works may be blotted out. 7 The slain will fall among you, and you will know that I am Yahweh.
8 “However, I will leave a (NV)remnant, for you will have those who (NW)escaped the sword among the nations when you are scattered among the lands. 9 Then those of you who escape will (NX)remember Me among the nations to which they will be carried captive, how I have (NY)been broken over their adulterous hearts which turned away from Me, and by their eyes which played the harlot after their idols; and they will (NZ)loathe themselves to their own faces for the evils which they have done, for all their abominations. 10 Then they will know that I am Yahweh; I have not said in vain that I would do this calamitous evil against them.”’
11 “Thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘Strike your hands together, (OA)stamp your foot and say, “(OB)Alas, because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, which will fall by the (OC)sword, by the famine, and by the plague! 12 He who is (OD)far off will die by the plague, and he who is near will fall by the sword, and he who remains and is besieged will die by the famine. Thus will I (OE)spend My wrath on them. 13 Then you will know that I am Yahweh when their (OF)slain are among their idols all around their altars, on (OG)every high hill, on all the tops of the mountains, under every green tree, and under every leafy oak—the places where they [da]offered a soothing aroma to all their idols. 14 So throughout all their habitations I will (OH)stretch out My hand against them and make the land more desolate and desecrated than the wilderness toward Diblah; thus they will know that I am Yahweh.”’”
The Pitiless Wrath of Yahweh
7 Moreover, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 2 “Now as for you, son of man, thus says Lord Yahweh to the land of Israel, ‘An (OI)end! The end is coming on the four corners of the earth. 3 Now the end is upon you, and I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and put all your abominations upon you. 4 For My eye will have no pity on you, nor will I spare you, but I will (OJ)put your ways upon you, and your abominations will be among you; then you will (OK)know that I am Yahweh!’
5 “Thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘A (OL)calamitous evil, a unique calamitous evil, behold, it is coming! 6 An end has come; the end has come! It has (OM)awakened against you; behold, it is coming! 7 Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The (ON)time has come; the (OO)day is near—confusion rather than joyful shouting on the mountains. 8 Now it is near when I will (OP)pour out My wrath on you and spend My anger against you and (OQ)judge you according to your ways and put on you all your abominations. 9 My eye will show no pity, nor will I spare. I will give to you according to your ways, while your abominations are among you; then you will know that I, Yahweh, do the striking.
10 ‘Behold, the day! Behold, it is coming! Your doom has gone forth; the (OR)rod has blossomed; arrogance has budded. 11 Violence [db]has grown into a rod of (OS)wickedness. None of them shall remain, none of their multitude, none of their (OT)moaning, nor anything eminent among them. 12 The (OU)time has come; the day has arrived. Let not the (OV)buyer be glad nor the seller mourn; for (OW)wrath is against all their multitude. 13 Indeed, the seller will not (OX)return to himself [dc]what he sold as long as [dd]they both live; for the vision regarding all their multitude will not return empty, nor will any of them strengthen his life by his iniquity.
14 ‘They have (OY)blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one is going to the battle, for My wrath is against all [de]their multitude. 15 The (OZ)sword is outside, and the plague and the famine are inside. He who is in the field will die by the sword; famine and the plague will also devour those in the city. 16 Even when their survivors (PA)escape, they will be on the mountains like (PB)doves of the valleys, all of them (PC)moaning, each over his own iniquity. 17 All (PD)hands will hang limp, and all knees will [df]become like water. 18 They will (PE)gird themselves with sackcloth, and (PF)horror will cover them; and shame will be on all faces and (PG)baldness on all their heads. 19 They will (PH)throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will become an impure thing; their (PI)silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the fury of Yahweh. They cannot satisfy their soul, nor can they fill their stomachs, for their iniquity has become an occasion of stumbling.
The Temple Profaned
20 They [dg]transformed the beauty of His ornaments into pride, and (PJ)they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an impure thing to them. 21 I will give it into the hands of the (PK)foreigners as plunder and to the wicked of the earth as spoil, and they will profane it. 22 I will also turn My (PL)face from them, and they will profane My secret place; then robbers will enter and profane it.
23 ‘(PM)Make the chain, for the land is full of (PN)judgments that promote bloodshed, and the city is (PO)full of violence. 24 Therefore, I will bring the most evil of the (PP)nations, and they will possess their houses. I will also make the (PQ)pride of the strong ones cease, and their (PR)holy places will be profaned. 25 Anguish has come, and they will seek (PS)peace, but there will be none. 26 (PT)Disaster will come upon disaster, and (PU)report will be added to report; then they will seek a (PV)vision from a prophet, but the (PW)law will be lost from the priest and (PX)counsel from the elders. 27 The king will mourn, the prince will be (PY)clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land will be dismayed. According to their way I will deal with them, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am Yahweh.’”
Visions of Abominations in the Sanctuary
8 Now it happened in the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, as I was sitting in my house with the elders of Judah sitting before me, that the hand of Lord Yahweh fell on me there. 2 Then I looked, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of [dh]one on fire; from His loins and downward there was the (PZ)appearance of fire, and from His loins and upward the appearance of brightness, like (QA)the gleam of [di]glowing metal. 3 He sent forth the form of a hand and took me by a lock of my head; and the (QB)Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the [dj]north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the figure of jealousy, which (QC)provokes to jealousy, was located. 4 And behold, the (QD)glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance which I saw in the plain.
5 Then He said to me, “Son of man, (QE)raise your eyes now toward the north.” So I raised my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate was this (QF)figure of jealousy at the entrance. 6 And He said to me, “Son of man, are you seeing what they are doing, the great (QG)abominations which the house of Israel is doing here, so that I would be far from My sanctuary? But yet you will see still greater abominations.”
7 Then He brought me to the entrance of the court, and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall. 8 He said to me, “Son of man, now (QH)dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and behold, an entrance. 9 And He said to me, “Go in and see the evil abominations that they are doing here.” 10 So I entered and looked, and behold, every form of creeping things and beasts and detestable things, with all the idols of the house of Israel, were carved on the wall all around. 11 Standing in front of them were (QI)seventy (QJ)elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them, each man with his (QK)censer in his hand and the fragrance of the cloud of incense rising. 12 Then He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each man in the room of his carved images? For they say, ‘(QL)Yahweh does not see us; Yahweh has (QM)forsaken the land.’” 13 And He said to me, “Yet you will see still greater abominations which they are doing.”
14 Then He brought me to the entrance of the (QN)gate of the house of Yahweh which was toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz. 15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Yet you will see still greater abominations than these.”
16 Then He brought me into the inner court of the house of Yahweh. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of Yahweh, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their (QO)backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east; and (QP)they were [dk]prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun. 17 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it too light a thing for the house of Judah to do the abominations which they have done here, that they have (QQ)filled the land with violence and (QR)provoked Me to anger still more? For behold, they are sending forth the twig to their nose. 18 Therefore, I also will do this in wrath: My eye will have no pity, nor will I spare; and (QS)they will cry in My ears with a loud voice, yet I will not listen to them.”
The Vision of Yahweh’s Wrath
9 Then He cried out in my hearing with a loud (QT)voice saying, “Draw near, [dl]O executioners of the city, each with his destroying weapon in his hand.” 2 And behold, six men were coming from the direction of the upper gate which faces north, each with his shattering weapon in his hand; and among them was (QU)a certain man clothed in linen with a [dm]scribe’s case at his loins. And they went in and stood beside the bronze altar.
3 Then the (QV)glory of the God of Israel went up from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the house of Yahweh. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose loins was the [dn]scribe’s case. 4 Yahweh said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a (QW)mark on the foreheads of the men who (QX)sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being done in its midst.” 5 But to the others He said in my hearing, “Go through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye have pity and do not spare. 6 (QY)Kill to utter destruction old men, chosen men, virgins, little ones, and women, but do not (QZ)touch any man on whom is the mark; and you shall (RA)start from My sanctuary.” So they started with the [do]elders who were before the house. 7 And He said to them, “(RB)Defile the house and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” Thus they went out and struck down the people in the city. 8 Now it happened as they were striking the people and I alone remained, that I (RC)fell on my face and cried out and said, “(RD)Alas, Lord Yahweh! Are You destroying the whole remnant of Israel [dp]by pouring out Your wrath on Jerusalem?”
9 Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is very, very great, and the land is (RE)filled with bloodshed, and the city is (RF)full of perversion; for (RG)they say, ‘Yahweh has forsaken the land, and Yahweh does not see!’ 10 But as for Me, (RH)My eye will have no pity, nor will I spare, but (RI)I will put their way upon their heads.”
11 Then behold, the man clothed in linen at whose loins was the scribe’s [dq]case responded with a word, saying, “I have done just as You have commanded me.”
Vision of Yahweh’s Glory Departing the Temple
10 Then I looked, and behold, in the [dr](RJ)expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a (RK)sapphire stone, in appearance in the likeness of a (RL)throne, appeared above them. 2 And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the (RM)whirling wheels under the [ds]cherubim and fill your hands with (RN)coals of fire from between the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.
3 Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the house when the man entered, and the cloud filled the (RO)inner court. 4 Then the (RP)glory of Yahweh rose up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the (RQ)house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the (RR)brightness of the glory of Yahweh. 5 Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer court, like the (RS)voice of [dt]God Almighty when He speaks.
6 Now it happened that when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he entered and stood beside a wheel. 7 Then the cherub sent forth his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some up, and put it into the hands of the one clothed in linen, who took it and went out. 8 And the cherubim appeared to have the form of a man’s hand under their wings.
9 Then I looked, and behold, (RT)four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a [du](RU)Tarshish stone. 10 As for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. 11 As they went, they went (RV)in any of their four [dv]directions without turning as they went; but they went in the direction which [dw]they faced, without turning as they went. 12 And their (RW)whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings, and the (RX)wheels were full of eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. 13 The wheels were called in my hearing, the whirling wheels. 14 And (RY)each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a man, the third the face of a lion, and the fourth the face of an eagle.
15 Then the cherubim rose up. They are the (RZ)living creatures that I saw by the river Chebar. 16 Now as the cherubim went, the wheels went beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels would not turn from beside them. 17 When [dx]the cherubim (SA)stood still, [dy]the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, [dz]the wheels would rise with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in them.
18 Then the glory of Yahweh departed from the threshold of the house and stood (SB)over the cherubim. 19 When (SC)the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the earth in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the house of Yahweh, and the glory of the God of Israel [ea]hovered over them.
20 These are the (SD)living creatures that I saw beneath the God of Israel by (SE)the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. 21 (SF)Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the likeness of human hands. 22 As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.
Judgment on Evil Counselors
11 Moreover, the (SG)Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the house of Yahweh which faced eastward. And behold, at the entrance of the gate, there were twenty-five men, and I saw among them Jaazaniah son of Azzur and (SH)Pelatiah son of Benaiah, officials of the people. 2 He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise wickedness and (SI)give evil counsel in this city, 3 who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. [eb]This (SJ)city is the pot, and we are the flesh.’ 4 Therefore, (SK)prophesy against them, son of man, prophesy!”
5 Then the Spirit of Yahweh fell upon me, and He said to me, “Say, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “So you say, house of Israel, for (SL)I know what comes up in your (SM)spirit. 6 You have (SN)multiplied your slain in this city, and you have filled its streets with [ec]them.” 7 Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, “Your (SO)slain whom you have laid in the midst of [ed]the city are the flesh, and this city is the pot; but [ee]I will (SP)bring you out of it. 8 You have (SQ)feared a sword; so a sword I will (SR)bring upon you,” Lord Yahweh declares. 9 “And I will bring you out of the midst of [ef]the city and give you into the hands of (SS)strangers and (ST)execute judgments against you. 10 You will (SU)fall by the sword. I will judge you to the (SV)border of Israel; so you shall know that I am Yahweh. 11 This city will (SW)not be a pot for you, nor will you be flesh in the midst of it, but I will judge you to the border of Israel. 12 Thus you will know that I am Yahweh; for you have not walked in My statutes, nor have you (SX)executed My judgments, but have executed according to the judgments of the (SY)nations around you.”’”
13 Now it happened as I prophesied, that (SZ)Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried out with a loud voice and said, “(TA)Alas, Lord Yahweh! Will You bring the remnant of Israel to complete destruction?”
Yahweh Will Gather the Exiles
14 Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 15 “Son of man, your brothers, your [eg]relatives, [eh]your fellow exiles, and the whole house of Israel, all of them, are those to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Go far from Yahweh; this land has been given to (TB)us as a possession.’ 16 Therefore say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Though I had removed them far away among the nations, and though I had scattered them among the countries, yet I was a (TC)sanctuary for them a little while in the countries where they had gone.”’ 17 Therefore say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “I will (TD)gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries among which you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”’ 18 When they come there, they will (TE)remove all its (TF)detestable things and all its abominations from it. 19 And I will (TG)give them one heart and give within [ei]them a new spirit. And I will take the (TH)heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a (TI)heart of flesh, 20 that they may (TJ)walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them. Then they will be (TK)My people, and I shall be their God. 21 [ej]But as for those whose hearts walk after their (TL)detestable things and abominations, I will (TM)give what is due for their way on their heads,” declares Lord Yahweh.
The Glory of Yahweh Leaves Jerusalem
22 Then the cherubim (TN)lifted up their wings with the wheels beside them, and (TO)the glory of the God of Israel [ek]hovered over them. 23 The (TP)glory of Yahweh went up from the midst of the city and (TQ)stood over the mountain which is east of the city. 24 Now the (TR)Spirit lifted me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God to the exiles in [el]Chaldea. So the vision that I had seen (TS)went up and away from me. 25 Then I (TT)told the exiles all the things that Yahweh had shown me.
The Vision of Captivity
12 Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, you live in the (TU)midst of the (TV)rebellious house, who (TW)have eyes to see but do not see, ears to hear but do not hear; for they are a rebellious house. 3 Now as for you, son of man, prepare for yourself baggage for exile and go into exile by day in their sight; even go into exile from your place to another place in their sight. (TX)Perhaps they will see, though they are a rebellious house. 4 Bring your baggage out by day in their sight, as baggage for exile. Then you will go out (TY)at evening in their sight, as those going into exile. 5 In their sight, dig a hole through the wall and [em]go out through it. 6 In their sight, carry the baggage on your shoulder and bring it out in the dark. You shall (TZ)cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have set you as a (UA)wondrous sign to the house of Israel.”
7 I (UB)did so, as I had been commanded. By day I (UC)brought out my baggage like the baggage of an exile. Then in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands; I went out in the dark and carried the baggage on my shoulder in their sight.
8 And in the morning the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the (UD)rebellious house, said to you, ‘(UE)What are you doing?’ 10 Say to them, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh, “This [en](UF)oracle concerns the prince in Jerusalem as well as all the house of Israel who are [eo]in it.”’ 11 Say, ‘I am [ep]a (UG)wondrous sign to you. As I have done, so it will be done to them; they will (UH)go into exile, into captivity.’ 12 The (UI)prince who is among them will carry his baggage on his shoulder in the dark and go out. [eq]They will dig a hole through the wall to bring it out. He will cover his face so that he cannot see the land with his eyes. 13 I will also spread My (UJ)net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. And I will bring him to Babylon in the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will (UK)not see it, though he will die there. 14 And I will (UL)scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops; and I will draw out a sword after them. 15 So they will (UM)know that I am Yahweh when I scatter them among the nations and spread them among the countries. 16 But I will [er]spare a few of them from (UN)sword, famine, and pestilence that they may recount all their abominations among the nations where they go, and [es]may (UO)know that I am Yahweh.”
17 Moreover, the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 18 “Son of man, (UP)you shall eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with quivering and anxiety. 19 Then you will say to the people of the land, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel, “They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with desolation because [et]their very soil will be (UQ)made desolate of its fullness on account of the violence of all who inhabit it. 20 The inhabited (UR)cities will be laid waste, and the (US)land will be a desolation. So you will know that I am Yahweh.”’”
